An American in Paris - 2010
"Paris is a mood, a longing you didn't know you had until it was answered. Paris is like... like, love or or art or faith. It can't be explained, only felt."This year's field show was namely inspired by the Gene Kelly/Vincente Minnelli cinematic masterpiece from 1951. The creative process began development during a phase when I was listening to Camille Saint-Saens, Symphony No. 3 ("Organ"). The show does not contain any of Saint-Saens' work but I was inspired by the Late-Romantic French composer's birthplace which is Paris, France. From there, many pieces and ideas came to mind.
The music has been arranged exclusively for the Viking Marching Band by Joe Henderson and Steve Pierson. Brittany Iler is this year's drill designer.
This year's field show is set in 3 movements:
- Movement 1 will feature music from George Gershwin's "An American in Paris" and "Rhapsody in Blue"
- Movement 2 draws from Les Miserables, "I Dreamed a Dream" and "One Day I'll Fly Away" from Moulin Rouge!
- Movement 3 opens with Count Basie's "April in Paris" and wraps up with Gershwin once more
